How to make a living and don't die trying

I read that 95% of people do not like their job. That sounds like a very high number indeed. But then I thought, well I do hate my job and most people that work with me too. But it could be cause the nature of my job. But then I tried to think about people who genuinely like their job. I then realized that unless you have a vocational job it is very difficult to really like your job. Some may say my job is OK and lately I have heard a lot that taking into account the current situation they are quite happy. But very few say I really like my job. And even if it is vocational as I said before there are other aspects involved like work environment, the whole organization and so on. You might like the job but hate your boss or being pissed about company policies.

Of course a lot has to do with the mindset you are in. Be positive always helps to get the better out of the job. Focus on the positive aspects and diminish the importance of other things definitely helps a lot. Having a good personal life also helps to be more positive about the job. But all this is subjective and depends on each individual. When you analyse the current job situation you can find some reasons why people are not satisfied with their job or career.

The first reason to me is the global changes that we are living. We are witnessing the fourth industrial revolution or Cyber Physical Systems revolution. This revolution integrate the back-office work with the computing system. Of course it means that loads of workers are going to be replaced by machines. You do not need to make studies about it to notice it. Just go to a supermarket and see that there are less tilts and more machines. Now you tend yourself and where there were 10 workers now there is one supervising the machines. All this creates less jobs and more IT or computers related jobs. Loads of them based on repetition like it was in the first industrial revolution. Office jobs are more and more measured by parameters such as productivity, efficiency and quality. We could say that jobs are becoming more robotics.

Other cause of this discontent and the lack of opportunities in the market nowadays for young people. Some people are being either replaced by machines or just lost their jobs due to the economy shrank. And the people who are educated, speak languages or are in a position of getting a better job simply have to endure a tremendous competition out there.

The third cause is linked with the previous one. The lack of motivation caused for the desperation is seeing that they cannot get the jobs that ten years ago were accessible to people with their caliber. And there is no point of saying that we have faced worse times and that if you compare these times with the big depression of the 29 of after a Civil War- or whatever that applies to your part of the world-we are not so bad. This argument does not work. People grew up thinking that if they studied and prepared themselves they will achieve certain status and others thinking that there will always be a jobs for there. Now they have to face a new reality that it is uncertain and unstable. It is like trying to convince someone that living in a cave was perfectly fine for a caveman. It just do not work.

I know it is difficult not to feel trapped and cheated by the system after all that happened. You should indeed feel that way in order to learn. But we all have to try to find our way out. Maybe trying to change our approach to work and looking for a different type of job or way of living. Maybe trying to be innovative or whatever you think you could do to overcome these feelings if you have them. At least if you try to do something you gain hope and that is already something.
